MHT-CET PCM and JEE Main PCM
MHT-CET is not a smaller JEE Main. It is set on the Maharashtra State Board syllabus, it runs at nearly three times JEE Main's pace in Physics and Chemistry, and it does not punish a wrong answer. This paper names the exact extra content, the exact topics that sit in a different school year, and what both facts change about how you spend your last three months.
1. Executive summary
MHT-CET is widely described as "JEE Main, but easier". That description is misleading in both directions, and the State CET Cell's own syllabus document does not support it — the Cell states plainly that the difficulty level for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics "will be at par with the JEE (Main)".
What is genuinely different is not the hardness of a single question. It is three other things.
First, the syllabus. MHT-CET is set on the Maharashtra State Board Std XI and Std XII syllabus, not on NCERT. Since CBSE rationalised its textbooks and NTA cut the JEE Main syllabus in 2024, Maharashtra has kept content that both dropped. Worked chapter by chapter against the current Balbharati books, MHT-CET's scope contains essentially all of JEE Main's, plus about fifteen extra items — eleven whole chapters and four named Physics topics. It is an addition, not a different subject.
Second, the school year a topic sits in. Maharashtra teaches ray optics, magnetism, semiconductors and surface chemistry in Std XI, where CBSE holds them to Class 12. It teaches rotational dynamics, fluids, kinetic theory, thermodynamics, oscillations and waves in Std XII, where CBSE teaches them in Class 11. Because MHT-CET fixes roughly 20% of the paper to Std XI and 80% to Std XII, a CBSE-anchored student can end up revising the right chapters at the wrong weight. This is the mistake that actually costs marks, and it is invisible unless someone draws you the map.
Third, the clock and the marking. One hundred Physics and Chemistry questions in ninety minutes is 54 seconds a question. And there is no negative marking at all, which makes a blank answer strictly worse than a guess, every time, without exception.
A CBSE-anchored preparation is not the wrong preparation for MHT-CET. It is most of the right one, plus a finite, nameable list of additions — and this paper's job is to name that list exactly.

Most of the ground is common, and it is the densest, highest-yield part of the course. This is worth saying before the differences, because the differences are easier to remember and that distorts planning.
It is also worth saying because of where that common ground comes from. It is the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of Std XI and Std XII — the chapters you are already obliged to sit the HSC on. The hours you spend on those chapters are not hours spent away from MHT-CET. They are the bulk of MHT-CET, done early.
In Physics, the overlap is close to total. Every chapter of the Maharashtra Std XII Physics book has a counterpart in the current JEE Main syllabus — rotational dynamics, fluids, kinetic theory, thermodynamics, oscillations, superposition of waves, wave optics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetic effects of current, electromagnetic induction, AC circuits, dual nature, atoms and nuclei, and semiconductor devices. So does every Std XI Physics chapter that MHT-CET actually draws on. Physics is the subject where a JEE-anchored student is closest to complete.
In Chemistry, the whole of the Std XII organic sequence carries over — halogen derivatives, alcohols, phenols and ethers, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids, amines and biomolecules. So do solutions, ionic equilibria, chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, coordination compounds, and the transition and inner transition elements. And p-block chemistry — Maharashtra's Elements of Groups 13, 14 and 15 in Std XI and Groups 16, 17 and 18 in Std XII — is fully retained by JEE Main. It is not a gap, and any list that tells you it is has been copied from a syllabus that expired years ago.
In Mathematics, matrices, the full calculus sequence from differentiation through differential equations, vectors, lines in three dimensions, probability distributions and binomial distribution all transfer without amendment.
A student who has built a serious NCERT foundation is not starting over for MHT-CET. They are extending — and the extension is finite, nameable and mostly in Chemistry and Mathematics.
4. What is different
4.1 The syllabus has diverged — and that divergence now has an expiry date
Maharashtra maintains its own Std XI and Std XII syllabus, written and published by the State Council of Educational Research and Training and printed by Balbharati. When CBSE rationalised NCERT and NTA cut the JEE Main syllabus in 2024, Maharashtra kept a set of chapters that both dropped. Those chapters are in MHT-CET and outside JEE Main. Section 6 lists them exactly.
The honest and important thing to say next is that this divergence is temporary, and it is on a published clock. Maharashtra has committed to an NCERT-aligned curriculum, reaching Std XI in 2027 and Std XII in 2028. When that lands, the central claim of this paper — that the two syllabi have genuinely separated — starts to unwind, and MHT-CET's content will drift toward JEE Main's.
That changes what you should do with this page. A student entering Std XI in 2027 will study a different book from the one this paper is written against, and should not plan a two-year preparation on section 6. A student writing MHT-CET in 2027 sits the last cycle of the old Std XII syllabus and should treat section 6 as fully live. A document that hides its own expiry date is not being careful with you.

Seventeen years of habit tell a CBSE student which chapters are "first-year, revise lightly" and which are "second-year, revise hard". In Maharashtra a good number of those labels are swapped. Because MHT-CET fixes roughly 20% of the paper to Std XI and 80% to Std XII, getting the label wrong means getting the effort allocation wrong.
The table below is the practical heart of this comparison. Nothing in it is new content. Every row is something the student already knows — filed under the wrong year. That is the whole of the problem, and it is a small one to fix compared with learning a chapter from nothing. A student who has the year-shift map in front of them is not behind. They are informed, and informed early.

Two corrections to lists circulating online, because they mislead in a costly direction. Gravitation does not move to Std XII in Maharashtra — it is Std XI Physics Chapter 5. Elasticity does not move either — it is Std XI Physics Chapter 6, Mechanical Properties of Solids. Older coaching material, and a good many websites still publishing today, place both in Std XII. That material is describing the pre-2021 Maharashtra syllabus, which no longer exists. A student who trusts it will over-weight two chapters that sit in the 20% band and under-weight the six mechanics and thermal chapters that genuinely moved into the 80% band.

4.3 Marking: no penalty at all, and Mathematics is worth double
MHT-CET awards 1 mark per correct answer in Physics and Chemistry and 2 marks per correct answer in Mathematics. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer. The raw score is out of 200, of which Mathematics alone is 100 — half the paper. JEE Main awards +4 and deducts 1 uniformly, out of 300, of which Mathematics is a third.
Two consequences follow, and both are firm.
No question should ever be left blank. There is no cost to a wrong answer, so a blank is a guaranteed zero while a guess is not. Section 7 works the arithmetic.
Mathematics deserves protection above everything else. At the margin, an hour spent on Mathematics is worth about two hours spent on Physics or Chemistry, purely on marks arithmetic. A student who is weak in Mathematics is penalised roughly one and a half times as heavily in MHT-CET as in JEE Main.
4.4 Time: the Physics and Chemistry section is the real difficulty
MHT-CET gives 90 minutes for the Physics and Chemistry section — 100 questions between them — and 90 minutes for Mathematics, at 50 questions. That is 54 seconds per Physics or Chemistry question and 108 seconds per Mathematics question. JEE Main gives 180 minutes for 75 questions, a uniform 144 seconds.
So the Physics and Chemistry section runs at nearly three times JEE Main's pace. This is where MHT-CET is genuinely hard, and it is not a difficulty that more conceptual depth solves. It is solved by recognition speed — seeing the standard form immediately, and not deriving what should be recalled. A strong JEE student who has never rehearsed at this clock can and does underperform here.
4.5 Cognitive demand: what actually differs
It is often said that MHT-CET questions are easier. The CET Cell's own syllabus document says otherwise: difficulty for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is stated to be at par with JEE (Main). We take the Cell at its word rather than repeating the folklore.
What genuinely differs is format and conditions, not stated standard:
MHT-CET is MCQ only, four options, with no numerical-value entry. Every question therefore carries a floor of information in its options that a JEE numerical question does not.
There is no negative marking, so partial reasoning that narrows four options to two is always worth acting on.
The clock in Physics and Chemistry is roughly a third of JEE Main's per question, which favours questions answerable in one or two steps and disfavours long cross-chapter modelling — not because such questions are barred, but because they cannot be asked at that density.
The practical translation is unchanged: MHT-CET rewards coverage and speed, JEE Main rewards depth under a longer clock. But the reason is the pattern, not a lower standard.
4.6 Two attempts and normalisation
MHT-CET 2026 was conducted in two sessions — PCM in April and again in May — and the better of the two percentiles was used. Because the exam runs across many shifts, results are published as normalised percentiles rather than raw marks, so the same raw score can map to slightly different percentiles in different shifts.
One point matters and is often stated backwards. Within a single session, percentile is monotone in raw score. More raw marks can never give you a lower percentile than fewer raw marks in that same session. Normalisation adjusts between shifts of differing difficulty; it does not undo the ordering inside one. So a guess that lands cannot hurt your percentile, and a guess that misses cannot either. What normalisation does mean is that planning around a target raw score is unreliable across sessions — the durable target is a percentile.
4.7 How a score becomes a rank
Admission runs through the Centralised Admission Process conducted by the State CET Cell. The merit rank is driven by the normalised MHT-CET PCM percentile. Class 12 PCM performance is an eligibility floor and is displayed on the merit list, where it is used in tie-breaking — it is not weighted into the rank.
The published tie-break order, applied only when percentiles are equal, runs: Mathematics marks, then Physics, then Chemistry, then the qualifying-examination PCM percentage, then HSC Mathematics, then HSC Physics, then the HSC aggregate. Mathematics breaks the tie first in both the CET and the board component — another reason to protect it.
Separate merit lists are published for Maharashtra State, All India, J&K and Defence candidates, and a separate list is published for candidates ranked on JEE Main. A JEE Main score is a parallel route into the same Maharashtra institutes, not a substitute for the CET.
On the home-university and domicile split, one correction to a figure that circulates loosely. The familiar 85:15 Maharashtra-State to All-India split is a rule for Government and Government-Aided institutes. Unaided private professional institutes — which hold the large majority of CAP seats — run a different distribution, including an institutional quota of up to about 20% and a different Maharashtra-State share. Quoting 85:15 as if it applied everywhere will give a family the wrong picture of where seats actually sit.
Some coaching and news sources describe a 50:50 weighting of MHT-CET percentile and Class 12 marks for engineering admission. This paper does not follow that, because published cutoffs are quoted purely as MHT-CET percentiles and the merit lists present Class 12 marks as a displayed and tie-breaking field

Students in Maharashtra rarely write only MHT-CET, and families comparing states get this wrong more often than anything else. Here is the whole picture in one place. The MHT-CET row is the one that governs you.

The contrast with Gujarat and Karnataka is the one to hold on to. There, half the merit rank is the board examination. In Maharashtra, the entrance percentile carries the rank and the board is a threshold and a tie-breaker. A family that moves between states, or compares them, should not carry the strategy across. This does not make the HSC unimportant — it decides eligibility, it breaks ties, and it is the same syllabus MHT-CET is set on.
That last point is the one to take away from this section. Whatever the rank formula does with your board marks, the studying underneath is one body of work, not two or three.
The HSC, MHT-CET and JEE Main all stand on the same Std XI and Std XII Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. You are not running three preparations. You are running one, with differences in pattern, pace, scope and marking at the edges — and this paper exists to name those edges so nothing at the edge takes you by surprise.
6. The syllabus delta
MHT-CET's syllabus is not a different syllabus. In content terms it effectively contains JEE Main's and adds to it. The additions below were worked chapter by chapter against the current Balbharati Std XI and Std XII books and the current NTA syllabus, in August 2026.
Two entries that appear on many published gap lists are not on this one, and both matter.
p-Block Elements is not a gap. JEE Main retains p-Block in full. Maharashtra splits it — Groups 13, 14 and 15 in Std XI, Groups 16, 17 and 18 in Std XII — but the content is common to both exams. Lists that show p-Block as MHT-CET-only are copied from a pre-2021 syllabus.
General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements is in neither exam. JEE Main removed it in 2024, and the current Maharashtra Std XII Chemistry book has no such chapter. Nobody needs to study it for either paper.

That is eleven whole chapters plus four named Physics topics — about fifteen items in all. Seven of the eleven chapters are Chemistry, which makes Chemistry the subject to audit first.
Linear Programming deserves a separate note, because it is usually explained wrongly. Linear Programming is still in the rationalised NCERT Class 12 Mathematics syllabus — it is Unit V of the current CBSE course, worth 5 marks in the board paper. It was never in the JEE Main syllabus, so it was not "removed in 2024" either. What this means for you is good news: a CBSE-anchored student has already met Linear Programming in school. It is missing from JEE Main practice, not from the student's education. Treat it as revision, not as new content.
Physics is the reassuring column here. There is not a single whole chapter of MHT-CET Physics outside the JEE Main syllabus — only four named topics, three of them thermal. Communication Systems appears on many older gap lists; it is neither in the current Maharashtra Std XII Physics book nor in MHT-CET's Std XI chapter list, and JEE Main removed it in 2024. It belongs on nobody's list.
7. A worked example
Because there is no negative marking, the arithmetic of attempting is simple and it is worth doing once, on paper, so that it is instinct on the day.
A blind guess on a four-option question is right one time in four. Its expected value is therefore a quarter of the question's marks. A blank is worth exactly zero. There is no version of this where the blank wins.

Now two students, with exactly the same knowledge, who behave differently in the last two minutes of each section.
Aarti works honestly and leaves alone what she does not know. In Physics and Chemistry she attempts 78 of 100 and gets 62 right — 62 marks. Twenty-two questions stay blank. In Mathematics she attempts 38 of 50 and gets 30 right — 60 marks. Twelve stay blank. Her raw score is 122 of 200.
Sameer knows precisely as much as Aarti and answers precisely the same questions with the same accuracy. The difference is that he reserves the last ninety seconds of each section to fill in every remaining blank, without reading them. In Physics and Chemistry his 22 blind fills are worth 22 × 0.25 ≈ 5.5 marks, taking him to about 67.5. In Mathematics his 12 blind fills are worth 12 × 0.5 = 6 marks, taking him to 66. His raw score is about 133.5 of 200.
Eleven and a half marks — close to 6% of the paper — for knowing nothing more than Aarti knows. And in practice the gap is wider, because most "blank" questions are not truly blind: a student who can rule out even one option moves from 0.25 to 0.33 expected marks in Physics and Chemistry, and from 0.50 to 0.67 in Mathematics.
Because percentile is monotone in raw score within a session, those extra marks can only move Sameer's percentile up or leave it unchanged. They cannot move it down.
The final ninety seconds rule — reserve the last ninety seconds of each section to fill every unanswered question. Not to read them. Not to solve them. To fill them. In an exam with no negative marking, a blank at the buzzer is the only avoidable zero on the paper.
Set an alarm in your head at the 88-minute mark of each 90-minute section. Ninety seconds is enough to click through twenty or thirty blanks. It is the cheapest marks on the paper and the easiest to forget under pressure, which is exactly why it needs rehearsing in mock tests rather than deciding on the day.
8. What this means for preparation
Audit Chemistry first. Seven of the eleven gap chapters are Chemistry. They need to be learned rather than revised, and none of them is conceptually hard — States of Matter, s-block, adsorption and colloids, chemistry in everyday life, solid state, polymers, and green chemistry and nanochemistry. Do this audit before optimising anything else, because it changes the shape of the whole plan.
Re-tag before you re-learn. Everything in the year-shift table in section 4.2 is content you already hold. It does not need relearning; it needs refiling at the year MHT-CET tests it, so the effort lands in the right proportion.
Give the six mechanics and thermal chapters Std-XII weight. Rotational dynamics, fluids, kinetic theory and radiation, thermodynamics, oscillations and superposition of waves sit in the 80% band in Maharashtra. A CBSE-anchored student treats them as first-year material and revises them lightly. That is the most expensive habit to carry into this paper.
Do not treat gravitation and elasticity as Std XII. They are Std XI, chapters 5 and 6. If your notes say otherwise, your notes are from before 2021.
Protect Mathematics above everything. It is 100 of 200 marks, and it is also the first tie-breaker. There is no other subject where an hour buys as much.
Treat Linear Programming as revision. You met it in Class 12 school Mathematics. It is missing from JEE practice, not from your education.
Attempt every single question. Rehearse the final-ninety-seconds rule in every mock until it is automatic.
Practise Physics and Chemistry at 54 seconds a question. This is the single most common reason well-prepared students underperform on this paper. It cannot be fixed by knowing more.
Target a percentile, not a raw score. Normalisation across shifts makes raw-score goals unreliable between sessions.
Use both attempts. The better percentile counts, which makes the first sitting a genuine rehearsal rather than a one-shot risk — and for 2027 that first sitting may fall in December or January, well before JEE Main. Check the notification early and plan the calendar around it.

First, what EduPeak is and is not. School and coaching class teach. Now the honest position. For a state exam built directly on NCERT, a CBSE-anchored view is very nearly the whole answer. MHT-CET is not that exam yet — though section 4.1 explains why it is moving in that direction. What such a view gives a Maharashtra student today is the great majority of the ground, mapped chapter by chapter, plus an exact statement of what remains. Because that view is built on the same Class 11–12 PCM the HSC and MHT-CET both stand on, a large portion of the compulsory PCM work is already covered by one honest, chapter-level picture of where a student stands. What remains is finite and named. EduPeak's position is to say which is which rather than to imply full coverage.
What already serves an MHT-CET aspirant
The common core, mapped properly. The overlap between a CBSE-anchored PCM framework and MHT-CET is large and it is the dense part of the course — all of Std XII Physics, the whole organic sequence, physical chemistry, and the full calculus and vector spine of Mathematics. These are already decomposed into key concepts, learning outcomes and assessment indicators, and tested at chapter level.
Chapter-level diagnostics in plain language — Strong, Developing, Needs work. A student can see which of the shared chapters are weak before deciding how to spend what time is left. That matters more here than in most exams, because the syllabus additions compete for the same hours.
Cognitive-level tagging. Every assessment indicator carries a Bloom level, so the same bank can be re-weighted toward the speed-and-recognition profile MHT-CET's clock imposes, without content being re-authored.
A Marathi interface. The student app runs in Marathi, so the platform does not add a language barrier on top of an examination one. For a student in a Marathi-medium school in a district town, that is not a convenience feature.
Pattern-honest assessment. A practice test should reproduce the real pattern and marking rather than flatter a student with an inflated score. This matters especially here: an exam with no negative marking makes it very easy to feel better prepared than you are, because nothing on the scoresheet ever punishes a wrong answer.
Capability directions
These are directions the platform is built to grow in, not dated commitments. They are described here so a school or family can judge the fit.
Coverage of the named delta. The mapping in section 6 is what makes targeted modules possible at all: a finite, named list of chapters and topics, ordered by MHT-CET weightage, rather than an open-ended "extra syllabus". Chemistry leads that list.
A Std XI / Std XII re-tagging layer, so that shifted outcomes surface at the year MHT-CET tests them and carry the right weight — turning section 4.2 from a table a student has to remember into behaviour the platform enforces.
Assessment at the real shape — 150 items, 1 mark for Physics and Chemistry and 2 for Mathematics, no negative marking, and above all the real section timing, so 54 seconds a question is rehearsed rather than discovered on exam day.
Readiness reported in the 20:80 proportion MHT-CET actually tests, rather than treating both years equally.
The design intent is the same as for any exam track EduPeak supports. What you already have going for you
It is worth ending on the balance sheet rather than on the additions, because the additions are what a student remembers and they are the smaller half.
The chapters are the same chapters. The Std XI and Std XII Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics you must study for the HSC is the material MHT-CET is set on, and it overlaps almost entirely with JEE Main. Physics has no whole chapter outside the JEE Main syllabus at all. The p-block is not a gap. Linear Programming you met in school. What genuinely sits outside is about fifteen items, seven of them Chemistry chapters that reward disciplined reading rather than months of problem practice.
The year-shift table is not extra content either. It is re-labelling work you have already done, so that the same effort lands where the paper weighs it. And from 2027 and 2028, as Maharashtra's books align with NCERT, even that map begins to shorten.
None of this makes the exam easy. Fifty-four seconds a question is fast, and speed has to be built rather than wished for. But the ground under you is far more familiar than the comparison tables in this paper make it look, and effort put into any one of these chapters is not effort spent on one exam. It counts in the HSC, it counts in MHT-CET, and most of it counts in JEE Main too. That is the compounding, and it is already running in your favour.
