GUJCET PCM and JEE Main PCM
GUJCET and JEE Main are built on the same NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, so a student in Gujarat is not running two syllabuses. They are running one syllabus against two very different clocks, two different marking rules, and two completely different ways of turning a score into a rank — and it is the last of those that is most often got wrong.
1. Executive summary
Students preparing for engineering admission in Gujarat routinely ask whether GUJCET and JEE Main are two preparations or one. On content the answer is reassuring: both rest on the same NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and a serious Class 12 foundation carries a long way into both. On structure the answer is no. The two exams differ in how much of the syllabus they draw on, how heavily they penalise a wrong answer, how much time they allow per question, and — decisively — in how a score becomes a merit rank.
That last difference is the one most often missed. GUJCET does not, by itself, rank anyone. The merit rank that governs engineering admission in Gujarat through the Admission Committee for Professional Courses is a weighted composite of Class 12 board PCM performance and GUJCET performance. Published descriptions of that weighting differ — 60:40 and 50:50 are both widely quoted — and the weighting has changed between admission cycles. Check the ratio for your own year against the current ACPC admission booklet.
The structural point does not depend on which ratio applies, and it is the point that matters: your Class 12 board marks are not a side-show to the entrance exam. They are a large part of the rank — on any published version of the formula, at least 40% of it. JEE Main works the other way round: the percentile is the rank, and board marks are only an eligibility threshold.
Whichever ratio your year uses, the board papers you are already sitting are a large share of the ACPC merit rank — so a student who treats them as a distraction from the entrance test has given away a large part of their rank before walking into the hall.
The ACPC merit weighting — the most important figure in this paper
Confirm the current year's weighting in the ACPC admission booklet before planning around it. Third-party sites disagree with each other and with the booklets, and the weighting has not been constant across cycles. Do not take this one from us or from any coaching site: read it in the booklet for your own admission year.

One percentile point is one percentile point, wherever you earn it, and the board examination carries a large share of the rank in every published version of the formula. A student who carries JEE habits into a GUJCET year, treating the board papers as something to be cleared while the real work happens elsewhere, is working against the arithmetic.
JEE Main works differently again. There the percentile is the rank, and board marks are a gate you clear once and then forget. The two systems ask for genuinely different allocations of a student's year.

3. What is the same
The syllabus core. GSEB Std 12 Science schools have adopted NCERT textbooks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and GUJCET is set on that syllabus. For practical purposes the GUJCET chapter list is the CBSE Class 12 chapter list — the same textbooks, the same formulae, the same worked-example base. Board revision is GUJCET revision. There is no separate content syllabus to acquire.

This is one body of work, not three. The Class 12 boards, GUJCET and JEE Main all stand on the same NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — a student in Gujarat is running one preparation, with differences in pattern, pace and marking at the edges. And because the ACPC rank leans heavily on board PCM, the work you are already obliged to do for the boards is the larger part of the entrance work too.
The reasoning the questions ask for. Both exams want the same underlying competence: read a situation, recognise which standard result applies, apply it without arithmetic slips. JEE Main asks for more steps of it at a time. It does not ask for a different kind of thinking at the base.
The direction of travel on the syllabus. Because both sit on NCERT, the 2023 rationalisation that trimmed the NCERT textbooks flows into both. When NCERT moves, GUJCET moves with it, and NTA has historically followed. That shared anchor is what makes a single preparation possible at all.
A student preparing seriously for JEE Main already carries more than enough content depth for GUJCET. What they do not automatically carry is the pattern, the pace, and — in one specific place in Chemistry — a chapter that runs the other way. Section 6 sets out that gap in both directions.
4. What is different
4.1 Scope: one class or two
JEE Main draws on Class 11 and Class 12. GUJCET is scoped to Std 12 alone. Class 11 remains prerequisite — nobody does Class 12 calculus without Class 11 limits, or Class 12 organic chemistry without Class 11 bonding — but it is not directly examinable. For a GUJCET-only student that roughly halves the examinable surface.
A caution worth stating plainly: some coaching material claims a 20:80 Class 11 / Class 12 split for GUJCET. That pattern belongs to Maharashtra's MHT-CET, not to GUJCET. The conducting authority's own position is that GUJCET is set on the Std 12 syllabus.
4.2 Marking: different numbers, identical incentive
GUJCET awards +1 and deducts 0.25. JEE Main awards +4 and deducts 1. The absolute values differ; the ratio does not. Both deduct exactly one quarter of what a correct answer is worth.
The consequence is the same in both exams. On a four-option question a blind guess carries a positive expected value of 6.25% of a correct answer — a quarter chance of the full mark against three quarters of a quarter-mark penalty — and eliminating even one option improves that sharply. Neither exam rewards leaving a multiple-choice question blank.
There is one place where the two now diverge, and it is new. JEE Main's Section B numerical-value questions used to be a free zone: ten questions of which five were attempted, with no penalty for a wrong entry. From the 2026 cycle all five numerical questions are compulsory and a wrong entry carries −1. There are no options to guess among in Section B, so a value you cannot actually compute is now a genuine cost rather than a free throw. GUJCET has no equivalent section; every one of its 120 questions is a four-option MCQ, and the attempt-everything logic holds across the whole paper.
4.3 Time: a speed exam and a depth exam
GUJCET asks 120 questions in 180 minutes — ninety seconds each. JEE Main asks 75 questions in 180 minutes — two minutes twenty-four seconds each. GUJCET gives you a little under two thirds of the time per question, over easier ground.
GUJCET is not a smaller JEE Main; it is a different skill, and a student who has only ever practised at JEE pace will run out of time on a paper they could otherwise have answered completely.
GUJCET rewards instant recognition of a standard form and clean arithmetic. JEE Main rewards sustained multi-step reasoning on a longer clock. Both are trainable. Neither trains the other by accident.
The paper-wise timing matters too. GUJCET's Physics and Chemistry are written together in 120 minutes and Mathematics separately in 60. Time can be moved between Physics and Chemistry but cannot be borrowed from either into Mathematics. That is a budgeting constraint JEE Main's single continuous sitting does not impose.
4.4 Cognitive demand
GUJCET items sit close to textbook level and draw heavily on NCERT examples and exercises. JEE Main items routinely chain concepts across chapters and require a modelling step before any formula becomes applicable. In learning-outcome terms, GUJCET's centre of gravity sits at Remember, Understand and Apply; JEE Main extends materially into Analyse.
The practical reading is that GUJCET rewards complete, accurate coverage of the textbook rather than depth on hard problems. A student who has been drilling JEE-level questions may be over-prepared conceptually and under-prepared on textbook detail — the direct, factual recall items that GUJCET uses freely.
4.5 Format, language and the single sitting
GUJCET is an offline OMR paper. That carries its own discipline: bubbling accuracy, tracking your position on the sheet, no on-screen flag-and-review panel, no automatic count of attempted questions. These are rehearsable skills and they are not rehearsed by a computer-based mock.
It is written once a year. JEE Main is offered twice, with the better score counting. A GUJCET candidate has no second attempt to correct a bad day — a cushion every JEE Main candidate has. This is an argument for the board papers as much as anything else: a student with strong board percentiles carries a large part of the rank into the hall that one difficult morning cannot take away.
On language, GUJCET is offered in Gujarati, English and Hindi, and the medium split is worth knowing because it is not what the national conversation assumes. In the 2025 cycle 78,614 candidates wrote GUJCET in Gujarati, 49,996 in English and 1,096 in Hindi. Gujarati medium is not a minority accommodation in this exam; it is how most of the cohort writes it. Any preparation material that exists only in English is unusable by roughly six candidates in ten.
4.6 The decisive difference: how a score becomes a rank
For Gujarat admissions through ACPC, the merit score is a weighted composite of the Class 12 board PCM theory percentile and the GUJCET percentile. Theory marks only — practical and internal assessment marks do not enter the merit calculation, though they do count towards your board result. The weighting between the two components is published differently in different places, 60:40 and 50:50 are both widely quoted, and it has changed between cycles: read it in the ACPC admission booklet for your own year. On every published version, board PCM is at least 40% of the rank.
For JEE Main, the percentile is the rank. The board requirement is a threshold — 75% aggregate, or 65% for SC and ST candidates, or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board — checked at JoSAA, and clearing it by a wide margin buys nothing at all. A student with 95% and a student with 76% stand identically in the JEE Main rank list.
There is one further route worth stating clearly. ACPC fills 5% of seats in government and grant-in-aid institutes on an All India Quota. Those seats are ranked on the JEE Main All India Rank alone. Board marks carry no weight on that list, and no board-and-entrance composite of any kind is applied to it.
There is no composite All India list — the 5% All India Quota seats are ordered on JEE Main All India Rank by itself, so a JEE Main score does not enter the state merit rank and the state formula does not enter the All India Quota.
The two routes are separate systems that happen to be administered by the same committee. Writing JEE Main does not improve your ACPC state rank, and a strong board percentile does not improve your All India Quota position.
5. How board marks count across the exams
The role of board marks is the sharpest axis of difference between the state and national entrance exams, and it is the one most often carried across incorrectly when a family compares states or when a student moves. You will meet this same table in every EduPeak exam paper, so wherever you read next, the frame is already familiar. The GUJCET row is highlighted.

Only three of the nine put board marks into the rank at all, and Gujarat and Karnataka put in the most. A student moving between these systems, or a school advising across them, should not assume that the strategy transfers. The habit that is correct in Gujarat is wrong in West Bengal, and the habit that is correct for JEE Main is expensive in Gujarat.
6. The syllabus delta
An earlier version of this page said there was "exactly one genuine content addition" in GUJCET against a JEE-scoped preparation, and named Linear Programming as a topic NTA removed in the 2024 syllabus reduction. Both halves of that need fixing.
Linear Programming was never in the JEE Main syllabus. It is not on any deleted-topics list and it is not among the current fourteen Mathematics units. What the 2024 reduction actually removed from Mathematics was Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning. So the gap is real — a student working purely from JEE material will not have covered Linear Programming — but the story attached to it was false, and any teacher would have caught it.
The second correction is that the gap does not run in only one direction. Chemistry is asymmetric the other way. The 2023 NCERT rationalisation deleted the Class 12 p-Block Elements chapter covering Groups 15 to 18, so GUJCET, which follows NCERT, does not test it. The NTA syllabus retains it. That is content a JEE Main candidate carries which a GUJCET-only candidate has no reason to hold — and it is the single largest thing a GUJCET student would have to add if they later decided to sit JEE Main.

The gap runs both ways — Linear Programming is in GUJCET and not in JEE Main, and p-Block Groups 15 to 18 is in JEE Main and not in GUJCET — so neither preparation is a strict superset of the other.
The chapter-level delta
Check both the current NTA syllabus annexure and the current NCERT rationalised content list. This comparison has a known expiry: the NCF-aligned NCERT textbooks reach Class 11 in 2026-27 and Class 12 in 2027-28, and every "removed from rationalised NCERT" claim in this table is pinned to a baseline that starts moving.

Percentages are easy to picture and percentiles are not, so it is worth walking the composite through with real numbers — and, because the weighting is published differently in different years, worth doing it twice. Take two candidates in the same cycle.
Meera is a strong board student. She works steadily through the year, her Class 12 PCM theory papers go well, and she reaches the 95th percentile on her board PCM theory. GUJCET is a faster paper than she is used to and she finishes at the 88th percentile.
Jignesh is close to the mirror image. His board papers go reasonably but not brilliantly and he lands at the 88th percentile. He has been practising at speed, GUJCET suits him, and he reaches the 96th percentile there.

Read that carefully, because it is the reason we refuse to assert a ratio here. Same two students, same four numbers, and the order of the two candidates flips depending on which weighting the cycle actually uses. Meera leads at 60:40; Jignesh leads at 50:50. Nobody can plan sensibly around a rule they have taken from a coaching handout or a search result. Look it up in the ACPC admission booklet for your own admission year.
Now the case that does not depend on the ratio at all. Suppose Jignesh had decided the boards were a distraction, let his board percentile slide to 80, and pushed his GUJCET percentile to 98 — the best GUJCET result of anyone in this example.

He has the highest GUJCET percentile in the table and the lowest merit score on both formulae. At 50:50, eight percentile points surrendered in the board papers cost four points of merit while two points gained in GUJCET returned one. At 60:40 the same eight board points cost 4.8 and the same two GUJCET points returned 0.8. The numbers differ; the verdict does not. It is a losing trade under every weighting anyone publishes, because board PCM is never less than 40% of the rank and GUJCET is never more than 60% of it.
Two notes on the arithmetic. First, these are percentiles, not percentages — your position relative to the cohort, not your marks out of 100. A 90% board score and a 90th-percentile board standing are different things and only the second one enters the formula. Second, exact ties do occur, and ACPC publishes a tie-breaking sequence to resolve them.
8. What this means for preparation
Treat the Class 12 board examination as a large part of the entrance exam, because arithmetically it is. Not a warm-up, not a formality to be cleared while the real work happens elsewhere. For an ACPC rank it is at least 40% of the result, and in some cycles 60%. This is the good news in the whole paper: the work your school already requires of you is the same work.
Check your year's weighting before you plan around it. One page of the ACPC admission booklet settles it. Nothing else you read online should be trusted over that page.
Build Class 11 as scaffolding, not as an examinable syllabus. Master what Class 12 depends on. Do not drill it as a GUJCET test target — it is not one.
Practise at GUJCET's clock, paper by paper. Ninety seconds a question is the constraint that decides the paper, and the Physics-plus-Chemistry block and the Mathematics block have to be paced separately because time cannot move between them.
Attempt every multiple-choice question. The marking scheme rewards it, and every GUJCET question is a four-option MCQ. If you also sit JEE Main, note that this instinct now needs a carve-out for Section B, where a wrong numerical entry costs a mark and there is nothing to eliminate.
If you are working from JEE material, add Linear Programming. It is a genuine gap and a compact, learnable chapter.
If you are a GUJCET student thinking about JEE Main, add p-Block Groups 15 to 18 and the whole of Class 11. The Class 11 load is the real work; the p-Block chapter is the one piece of Class 12 that a GUJCET preparation leaves out.
Rehearse the OMR format itself — bubbling, tracking your position, and working without a review panel or an attempted-question counter.
If you are preparing for JEE Main anyway, you are close to GUJCET-ready on content. Spend GUJCET-specific time on pattern, speed and the board papers, not on new topics.

Chapter-level diagnostics in plain language — Strong, Developing, Needs work. Because a large share of the ACPC merit rank is board PCM theory performance, chapter-level board readiness is directly rank readiness. One report serves both.
A Gujarati interface. The student app runs in Gujarati, so the platform does not add a language barrier on top of an examination one. Given that roughly six in ten GUJCET candidates write the paper in Gujarati, this is not a nicety.
Pattern-honest assessment. EduPeak's stated position is that a practice test should reproduce the real pattern and marking rather than flatter the student with an inflated score.
Taken together, these rest on the same Class 11–12 PCM syllabus the boards, GUJCET and JEE Main all rest on — so a large portion of the mandatory PCM preparation is already covered by one honest, chapter-level view of where a student stands.

The ground is more familiar than it looks
It is worth ending on what a student in Gujarat already has going for them, because the list is longer than the list of gaps.
The syllabus is one syllabus. The textbooks in your bag are the textbooks the exam is set on. Every hour spent on a Class 12 NCERT chapter is an hour spent on the board paper, on GUJCET, and — if you decide to go that way — on the Class 12 half of JEE Main. Nothing has to be learned twice. What is left over after the content is genuinely small and genuinely specific: a faster clock, an OMR sheet, one chapter each way. Those are habits and details, not a second education, and they respond quickly to practice.
And the largest single component of the ACPC rank is the part you are already obliged to do. A student who works their chapters steadily through Std 11 and Std 12 is not preparing for the boards and then preparing for an entrance exam. They are doing one body of work that counts twice. Knowing honestly, chapter by chapter, where that work currently stands is most of what a plan needs — and it is what EduPeak is for.

All figures describe the 2026 admission cycle. That cycle has closed. Every reader acting on this paper is a 2027 candidate or later, and every figure in it — pattern, marking, syllabus scope and above all the merit weighting — must be re-verified against the current-cycle official documents before it is used to make a decision.
Two changes are already known to be coming and are worth planning around. The NCF-aligned NCERT textbooks reach Class 11 in 2026-27 and Class 12 in 2027-28, which means the rationalised-NCERT baseline underneath the syllabus delta in Section 6 begins moving from the next session, and NTA will have to follow it. And the ACPC merit weighting is published inconsistently across sources and has changed between cycles; this paper therefore states the structure of the formula rather than a ratio, and asks every reader to take the ratio from the admission booklet for their own year.
This paper states the syllabus comparison at chapter and unit level. EduPeak's row-level learning-outcome mapping against GUJCET was completed in August 2026 and is the basis for the statement in Section 3 that effectively every Class 12 learning outcome transfers unchanged.
