KCET PCM and JEE Main PCM
In Karnataka, half your engineering rank is decided before you ever walk into the KCET hall. KEA builds the merit rank from two equal halves — your KCET percentage and your 2nd PUC PCM theory percentage. Everything else you will read here is smaller than that one fact.
1. Executive summary
KCET is often described as the state entrance test sitting closest to an NCERT-anchored preparation. Karnataka's Department of Pre-University Education has adopted NCERT textbooks for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology, and KEA sets KCET on the 1st and 2nd PUC curriculum. At the level of what a chapter is called, that is true.
It is not the whole picture, and the gap is the most useful thing you will learn here. NCERT rationalised its textbooks in 2023, cutting whole chapters. JEE Main followed that cut in its 2024 syllabus revision. KEA's published KCET syllabus did not. It still lists the older, fuller PUC chapter list. So a student preparing from JEE Main material carries a real content hole into KCET, and it is not one chapter — it is around fourteen units, most of them Chemistry. Section 6 sets them out.
The second thing that dominates is the rank formula. KEA does not rank students on the KCET score. The merit rank is a 50:50 composite — half the KCET percentage, half the 2nd PUC PCM theory percentage. Board marks are not a gate to be cleared and forgotten, as in JEE Main. They are half the rank. A student who treats the board examination as a distraction from the entrance test has given away half of what is being measured.
Around those two sit smaller but real differences: no negative marking at all, offline on OMR across three separate sittings, both PUC years in scope, and roughly 80 seconds per question against JEE Main's 144.
KEA's published KCET syllabus retains the un-rationalised PUC chapter list, so the 2023 NCERT rationalisation that JEE Main followed does not flow through to KCET.

The shape of the subjects. Physics covers the same mechanics, thermal physics, oscillations and waves, electromagnetism, optics and modern physics sequence. Chemistry covers the same physical, inorganic and organic ground. Mathematics covers the same algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry and probability. If you have built a solid NCERT-anchored PCM foundation, the great majority of it serves both exams. Nothing here is wasted work.
Both years count. KCET draws on both PUC years rather than only the second, which makes its scope closer to JEE Main's than to a Class-12-only exam. For a student running a two-year preparation, that is convenient: first-year effort stays live.
The textbooks behind them are the same family. Karnataka PU teaches from NCERT. The disagreement described in section 6 is not about which book — it is about which edition of the chapter list KEA still examines.
And the work underneath all three is one body of work. The 2nd PUC board examination you have to sit anyway, KCET and JEE Main are set on the same Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Nobody in Karnataka is running two preparations, or three. They are running one, and then handling differences of pattern, pace, scope and marking at the edges. Those edges are real and they are named plainly below, chapter by chapter, because a difference you can see is a difference you can plan around. But they are the edges. The chapter work in the middle is shared, and it is the part that takes the time.
The board examination, KCET and JEE Main all stand on the same 1st and 2nd PUC Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. That is one body of work with differences at the edges — not two or three preparations competing for the same evenings.
4. What is different
4.1 The decisive difference: board marks are half the rank
KEA computes a composite merit score out of 100: half from the KCET PCM percentage and half from the 2nd PUC PCM percentage. Ranks are assigned on that composite, not on the KCET score. Only 2nd PUC theory marks count — internal assessment and practical marks are excluded — and 1st PUC marks do not enter the merit calculation at all, even though 1st PUC content is examinable in the paper.
One detail that is easy to miss and changes how you should think about your board marks: KEA normalises qualifying-examination marks before using them. Candidates come to KCET from several boards, and KEA converts those marks to a common scale so a mark from one board is comparable with a mark from another. The number entering the 50:50 is the normalised figure, not necessarily the raw percentage on your marks card. Two consequences. Your board percentage is still the thing you control, so the advice does not change — protect it. But do not do fine-grained rank arithmetic on your raw percentage and treat the answer as exact. Treat it as a direction, not a decimal.

That formula is usually presented as a warning, and it can be read the other way round — which is the more useful way to read it. The 2nd PUC examination is not optional. Every candidate has to sit it, and every candidate has to study its Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics chapter by chapter to do so. In Karnataka, that compulsory work is not a tax on entrance preparation. It is half the entrance preparation, counted directly. A student who works steadily through the PUC chapters between now and the board papers is not choosing school over KCET; they are building half their rank, and the same chapters carry most of the way into the other half as well.
Very few states arrange things this kindly. Six of the nine routes in section 5 put board marks nowhere near the rank, so a student there does the board work and gets no entrance credit for it. In Karnataka the effort is counted twice — once by the board and once by KEA — which makes the ordinary, unglamorous business of finishing your chapters the highest-return thing available to you.
4.2 No negative marking at all
KCET awards 1 mark for a correct answer and deducts nothing for a wrong one. There is no arithmetic under which leaving a question blank beats guessing: a blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not.
The habit this builds is the opposite of the one JEE Main builds. A student trained on a −1 penalty learns to leave uncertain questions alone, and that instinct earns marks in JEE Main and costs marks in KCET. It is a small switch, but it has to be practised rather than remembered on the day. In the last five minutes of a KCET paper, every unfilled bubble is a mark you have chosen to give up.
4.3 Volume, speed and the three-sitting structure
KCET asks 60 questions in 80 minutes per subject — about 80 seconds each — against JEE Main's roughly 144. A faster pace over easier ground, and it rewards recognising a standard form rather than deriving it.
A PCM candidate writes three papers: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, spread across two days. (A candidate taking Biology writes a fourth; a PCM candidate does not.) Each paper stands alone, so you cannot borrow ten minutes from Chemistry to finish Mathematics — easier in one way, harder in another, since a weak subject cannot be rescued by a strong one within a sitting.
The exam is written offline on an OMR sheet. Bubbling discipline and tracking your position on the sheet are real skills. There is no review panel, no flag-for-later, and no automatic count of what you have attempted. A student who has only ever practised on a screen has not practised this.
4.4 Cognitive demand and question style
KCET questions stay close to PUC textbook level and lean heavily on the textbook's own examples and exercises. JEE Main chains concepts across chapters and requires a modelling step before any formula applies. In learning-outcome terms, KCET's centre of gravity sits at Remember, Understand and Apply, while JEE Main extends materially into Analyse.
So KCET rewards complete, accurate coverage of the textbook rather than depth on hard problems. A student drilling JEE-level questions may be over-prepared conceptually and under-prepared on textbook detail — the direct, factual recall items KCET uses freely and JEE Main largely does not.
4.5 Eligibility, and the fact there is no minimum score
Two things are often confused here, so they are worth separating.
Board eligibility. A candidate must have passed the 2nd PUC or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Electronics or Computer Science. It is not "PCM" in the narrow sense — Chemistry is one of five options for the third subject. A minimum aggregate applies in those subjects: 45% for General Merit, 40% for reserved categories in Karnataka. Check the bulletin for the exact list, as this clause carries category-specific variations.
A minimum KCET score. There isn't one. No minimum marks are prescribed for KCET. You will see 90 out of 180 for General Merit and 72 for SC and ST quoted widely online. That rule is not in KEA's bulletin. It matters more than a typical factual correction, because a student who believes it and scores below it may conclude they have failed and stop preparing, when they have not failed anything. A rank is computed for eligible candidates from the composite score.
4.6 The tie-break, and what it says about Chemistry
When two candidates finish on the same composite merit score, KEA breaks the tie in a published order:
1. Higher marks in KCET Mathematics
2. Then higher marks in KCET Physics
3. Then higher marks in KCET Chemistry
4. Then age
Every criterion before age is a KCET subject mark. Qualifying-examination marks play no part in the tie-break, despite being half the merit score itself.
Two things follow. Mathematics is the first tie-break, a quiet argument for protecting it — but it is the first, not the first and third. And Chemistry, which a JEE-focused student sometimes treats as the subject to be strategic about, is the last subject standing before the tie falls to date of birth. In an exam with no negative marking and a compressed scoring band, ties are not rare.
The KCET tie-break runs on KCET subject marks alone — Maths, then Physics, then Chemistry, then age. Your board marks are half your rank, but they will not break a tie.
5. How board marks count across the exams
This is the sharpest axis of difference between India's engineering entrance tests, and it is the one most often carried across incorrectly when a family compares states or a school advises across them. You will meet this same table in every EduPeak exam paper, so wherever you read next, the frame is already familiar.

Read down that column and the point makes itself. KCET puts the board examination at half the outcome. Gujarat gives it a large weighted share too — published as 60:40 or 50:50 in different years, so a Gujarat student must check their own. AP EAPCET puts it at a quarter. The other six do not put it in the rank at all. A student sitting both KCET and COMEDK — which many Karnataka students do — is writing two exams in the same city, from the same syllabus family, under two completely different rules about what their 2nd PUC marks are worth.
6. The syllabus delta
NCERT rationalised its Class 11 and 12 textbooks in 2023, removing whole chapters. NTA followed that in the JEE Main 2024 syllabus revision. KEA's published KCET syllabus did not — it continues to list the fuller, un-rationalised PUC chapter list. The two syllabi have drifted apart, and the drift runs one way: KCET tests things JEE Main no longer does. A JEE-scoped preparation is a subset of a KCET-scoped one, not an equal.
This is not the same question as what your PUC board examination covers. The Department of Pre-University Education and KEA are different authorities publishing different documents, and where they differ, it is KEA's syllabus that governs what appears in the KCET paper. Check this table against KEA's own syllabus PDF, not against your board's reduced-syllabus circular.

Fourteen of those are clear-cut; two need checking against the current documents rather than being taken from this table. Nine of the fourteen are Chemistry — which is the actionable finding. If you are preparing from JEE Main material, your Chemistry has the largest hole in it, and it is a hole of whole chapters rather than hard problems. Those chapters are also among the more memorisable ones, so the gap is closable by disciplined reading rather than months of problem practice.
One correction to a claim you may have read elsewhere: Linear Programming was not removed from JEE Main in 2024. It was never in the JEE Main syllabus at all. The gap is real; the story attached to it was not.
Experimental Skills. In 2025 KEA added an Experimental Skills unit to the KCET syllabus, covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This is worth knowing for two reasons. It is content a student working from an older KCET syllabus will not have seen. And it moves KCET closer to JEE Main rather than further away, since JEE Main Physics has long carried its own Experimental Skills unit. It is one of the few places where the two syllabi converged rather than diverged.
Nine of the fourteen clear-cut diverging units are Chemistry. If you are preparing from JEE Main material, that is where your KCET gap is — and it is whole chapters, not hard problems.
7. A worked example
Two candidates, to show what the 50:50 actually does.

Candidate B is 20 marks better in the entrance exam and still finishes behind, because Candidate A is 60 marks better across three board papers. Neither half rescues the other on its own.
What one mark is worth, exactly. The two exams have different totals — 180 for KCET, 300 for the board PCM theory — so a mark in one is not a mark in the other. The arithmetic:
- One KCET mark = 1/180 = 0.5556 percentage points of the KCET half. Halved into the composite: 0.2778.
- One board mark = 1/300 = 0.3333 percentage points of the board half. Halved into the composite: 0.1667.
- Ratio: 0.2778 ÷ 0.1667 = 1.667. One KCET mark is worth five-thirds of a board mark.
So five board marks move your composite about as much as three KCET marks. Not three-for-two, which is the figure that circulates and which overstates what board marks are worth. Five for three.
Two honest qualifications. This ratio uses raw board marks, and KEA normalises qualifying marks before the composite, so treat 5:3 as the right order of magnitude rather than a precise exchange rate. And because there are 300 board marks on offer against 180 KCET marks, the two halves balance exactly by design — neither is the cheaper place to earn. The point of the arithmetic is not to tell you where to spend your time. It is to stop you believing the board examination is a warm-up.
8. What this means for preparation
Treat the 2nd PUC board examination as half the entrance exam, because arithmetically it is. Five marks gained across the board PCM papers are worth roughly three gained in KCET, and there are 300 of them on offer.
Close the Chemistry gap first if you are working from JEE Main material. Nine chapters, listed in section 6. This is the single highest-value item on the list and it is closable by reading.
Cover Linear Programming, Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning. Three Mathematics units that a JEE-scoped bank will not contain at all.
Do not neglect 1st PUC content. It is examinable in the paper even though 1st PUC marks do not enter the merit calculation. Half the divergent units in section 6 are 1st PUC.
Attempt every question. There is no negative marking. A blank is the only guaranteed loss, and unlearning the JEE skipping instinct takes deliberate practice, not a reminder on exam morning.
Practise at 80 seconds a question, paper by paper. Three separate sittings means each subject must be paced on its own, with no borrowing across subjects.
Work from the textbook, not only from problem sets. KCET uses direct, textbook-anchored items that JEE-style practice does not rehearse.
Protect Mathematics, and do not write off Chemistry. Maths is the first tie-break; Chemistry is the last one before age.
Rehearse the OMR sheet itself — bubbling, position tracking, and the absence of any review panel.
Add the Experimental Skills unit if your material predates 2025.
Re-verify everything in June and again in the month the bulletin drops. You are a 2027 candidate reading a 2026 document.
9. Five common misconceptions

10. How the EduPeak CBSE PCM learning pattern supports KCET preparation

The first reason is scope. KCET examines both PUC years, matching the two-grade shape of EduPeak's learning framework directly, where a Class-12-only exam leaves half the framework out of scope. The second is the 50:50 formula. EduPeak's core output is chapter-level board readiness across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; in Karnataka that is not adjacent to the entrance result, it is half of it, measured in something close to the units KEA uses.
The gap is section 6. A framework built to the rationalised NCERT chapter list is, by construction, missing the units KEA still examines. That is stated plainly rather than glossed, because a student who assumes coverage they do not have is worse off than one who knows the gap exists.
What already serves a KCET aspirant
Both years, decomposed and tested. Grade 11 and Grade 12 chapters broken into key concepts, learning outcomes and assessment indicators, matching KCET's two-year scope.
Chapter-level diagnostics in plain language — Strong, Developing, Needs work. Because half the KCET merit score is 2nd PUC PCM theory performance, chapter-level board readiness is directly relevant to the rank, in the same subjects KEA weighs.
Cognitive-level tagging. Every assessment indicator carries a Bloom level, so the same bank can be re-weighted toward KCET's Remember / Understand / Apply centre of gravity without content being re-authored.
Pattern-honest assessment. A practice test should reproduce real marking rather than flatter the student — which matters here, because an exam with no negative marking makes an inflated score easy to mistake for readiness.
Capability directions
Where the work is heading. These are not commitments to dates, and a student should plan around what exists today.
Coverage of the KCET syllabus delta — the un-rationalised units in section 6, Chemistry first, since that is where the gap is largest and most closable.
A KCET mock family at the real shape — 60 items per subject, +1 with no deduction, and 80-minute single-subject sittings rather than one combined paper.

The design intent is unchanged across every exam track. One properly built PCM foundation, tested honestly at chapter level, should serve the board examination and the entrance test together. Karnataka is where that intent and the admission formula agree most closely: the state has decided half the merit calculation is what a student learned across two years of school, which is precisely what a chapter-level learning framework is built to measure. The syllabus delta is the part of that agreement still to be built.
What you already have going for you
Most of these pages have been about differences, because differences are what you cannot see for yourself. But the differences are the smaller half of the picture.
The subjects are the same subjects. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics across both PUC years serve the board examination, KCET and JEE Main at once, and the great majority of that content is common to all three. Both PUC years stay in scope for KCET, so first-year work does not go stale. And the divergence that does exist is a list of units you can read and hold — around fourteen, nine of them Chemistry chapters that close by disciplined reading rather than by months of hard problems.
Then there is the structure of the rank itself, which is the most encouraging fact in this whole series. The board examination you must sit anyway is half of what KEA measures. No other work you do this year is counted twice like that.
None of this makes KCET easy. Eighty seconds a question is quick, the OMR sheet has to be rehearsed, and the guessing habit has to be rebuilt from the JEE one. Those are real and they take practice. But the ground under you is far more familiar than a comparison table makes it look, and every chapter you finish properly is counted in more than one place. That is the compounding, and it is already working for you.

A note on sources. Version 1.0 cited aggregator sites for facts KEA's own bulletin states verbatim — the merit formula, the tie-break sequence, the qualifying thresholds. Two of those aggregators are commercial JEE preparation providers. In revision, aggregator pages turned out to be the origin of at least two errors in version 1.0, the non-existent minimum score and the wrong tie-break order, and were found contradicting each other on which chapters JEE Main removed in 2024.
