The source's drawing of this ring is faulty in two ways: it carries a spurious ring double bond from that same carbon to its neighbour, which makes that carbon pentavalent, and it is drawn with one ring vertex too many between the nitrogen and the carbonyl carbon, so the printed ring reads as six-membered even though the intended structure, and the ring drawn in the printed solution, is the five-membered lactam. A horizontal arrow labelled (i) NaOH with the heat symbol delta above and (ii) H plus below leads to A, Major Product, and the line under it reads: A is. The four choices are all drawn structures. Choice (1) is an open skeletal zig-zag chain running from a MeHN label on the left to a COOH label on the right.
